Fatigue while driving

Did you know that shift workers are six times more likely to be in a fatigue-affected road crash than other workers?

In Victoria, driver fatigue is a factor in over 25% of road incidents.

Fatigue can make you feel many different things. Beyond just being tired, it can impact your vision, your reaction time and can make it harder for you to make decisions quickly and correctly.

Driving after being awake for 17-19 hours is equivalent to driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of approximately 0.05%. At this level, the risk of a crash is double than with a BAC of zero. Driving after 24-27 hours is equivalent to driving with a BAC of around 0.1%. (National Road Safety Statistics)

CPV drivers must be especially careful to properly manage fatigue and wellbeing – not only for their safety, but for the safety

of passengers and other road users.

The best remedy for drowsiness is sleep, but there are other ways to manage fatigue.

  1. Consider your schedule. Try and only work day shifts or only night shifts - don't swap them around. Ensure you give yourself adequate time between shifts to rest.
  2. Take breaks regularly and allow yourself enough uninterrupted rest every day.
  3. Keep your diet healthy and exercise regularly.
